I’ve had my eye on that plastic container of chocolate chip cookies for days now — it’s the perfect size for a windowsill greenhouse. Got a couple other food containers stockpiled in the kitchen.
And that growing pyramid of toilet paper tubes, I’m saving those to use as seed starters. (Problem is, I started hording these a little too late; at this point, I covet cardboard tubes so much, it was all I could do not to lift some from the ladies’ room at the local Indian restaurant on Valentine’s Day. Next time I’ll bring a tote bag in.)
I’m also cramming square-foot gardening in order to maximize harvest and minimize labor in the plot — and on the sunny deck — this year. My biggest obstacles last year were slugs and a late spring. The green peppers, in particular, disliked those chilly nights, and the slugs pretty much finished them off, so the plan this year is to nurture several pepper plants on the deck.
Maybe there’ll be room for green peps, salad greens, and flowers out there, within quick reach? Excitement!
